The Devon Diesel Society has now acquired a Rectank wagon and this was recently delivered to the South Devon Railway. The wagon had previously been used at Plymouth Laira Depot to carry Class 50 power units and will prove useful in this role as work progresses on restoring D402 to full working order.

Work has commenced on overhauling the wagon with several members of the Society starting to remove the old wooden decking - using a range of 'specialist' tools in the process.

Rectank1    Left: The size of the Rectank can be judged in this shot of the wagon within the PLOG Shed at Buckfastleigh. The blocks added to support a Class 50 engine can be clearly seen as can the general condition of the wagon.

Above: This is a close up of one end of the wagon looking towards the buffer beam. The amount of rust and accumulated grime can be clearly seen. Plenty of work to keep society members occupied during the coming months.   Above: Work underway to remove the wooden decking of the wagon. Again this has revealed further rust and grime that had built up over the years the wagon was at Laira. The high tech equipment used to remove this section of the decking can be seen at the bottom of the photo.

The amount of dirt, rust and debris that has accumulated can be clearly seen.   Above: A closer view of the Traction Motor Blower with the AVR in front. Both are showing the amount of dirt that has accumulated in this section of the loco.

D402 Supervisor
A very happy looking 'Supervisor' beside D402. Was Jon Morton thinking that hole wasn't there yesterday and if it was how come he didn't notice it?

Although attention has been focussed on the Society's other loco's over the winter work has been continuing on an as time allows basis on the components from D402 that were sent to Babcocks in Plymouth last year for overhaul.

Welcome to the refurbished Devon Diesel Society Class 50 Appeal website.

Over the winter the website has undergone an overhaul, changing the layout of pages to make them easier to view.

Other changes have included:

  • Reworking the Track Record pages to include information that was previously included on the Loco History page;

  • Splitting the details of Books, Videos and DVD's into their own pages, and;

  • The reorganisation of the Photo Galleries.

We hope that you find the changes have improved the website and your experience of using it.
